The last test shows, if I really trusted my work. To understand why, you need to know that an incorrect working coil can be very dangerous. The receiving coil has to be very sensitive since the MR signal is very small. Before the signal can be received from the slice, the slice is excited by the transmitting coil with quite high power (a few kW!). If the little receiving coil is still sensitive in the moment the excitation pulse is applicated it will be destroyed. This is only the smaller problem because resonant structures (cables, coils, etc.) will start to swing (electrically) and thus a very high current might flow inside them. This will not only heat up the structure until it burns - it will also induct currents inside the patient which causes burnings. The nasty thing about these RF burns is that they are not necessarily noticed when they happen (they will be felt one day later), because there are no pain receptors in the good conducting tissues under the skin. (For more information see the online book "The Basics of MRI", Chapter 9: Imaging Hardware, Safety!)
To avoid these problems the receiving coil must be made insensitive when the excitation pulse is send. This is called detuning. With the new transmission line introduced by COCONUT a new detuning method became possible and was also implemented in this example.

This experiment will show if the new method works. And since I build this thing it was of cause my hand that should be scanned! But hey! No wrist - no fun, so here are the first wrist images:

The upper left image is the most upper slice where also the veins on the surface of my hand are visible. The lower left image is the last slice, where the skin becomes visible in the middle of the picture.
These first wrist pictures are unfortunately taken with settings of the previously made tomato scan, thus the wrist is only partly visible at the bottom of the picture (the tomato is much smaller than the possible field of view of the COCONUT PALM). As mentioned before RF burnings might become visible only after days and there was no time left, so the scan was not repeated and also not tuned to the maximum image quality.

These pictures, taken in the last week of my internship, were a nice finale of my work and I would like to thank my whole colleagues for their help and for the nice time I had in Best!

PS:
Nothing happened to my hand, so the detuning really works!
